Self Advocacy Open House
Key Center has undertaken a school-wide initiative to expand all students’ ability to self-advocate, their opportunities to self-advocate and the environments in which they self-advocate and will develop and sponsor a self-advocacy training platform in FCPS 24/7 and a workshop for parents/families. With this initiative, we aspire to empower families to learn to reinforce the strategies employed at school throughout the student’s day and will provide them with tools to take home, “homework”, to use in the student’s family environment.
We are holding an open house inviting parents in for demonstrations of how we implement self-advocacy throughout the school. We will also offer parents the opportunity to make personalized picture symbol choice cards to take home to help their student communicate at home in a manner in which they are familiar with at school. Parents will also be offered the opportunity to check out a communication device to take home for an initial two week period. Having a child with severe disabilities often impedes a parent’s ability (and desire) to participate in school sponsored activities. For this reason, we will be offering a pizza lunch as an incentive to come in and will have support on hand to help support families with their children.
