February 17th - Presidents Day (Holiday)

All schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 17, for the Presidents Day holiday. See the complete school year calendar.

Immunization

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, May 19, students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization status and submit updated immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources. Be wise and immunize!

Key Center Observes Lunar New Year

                             ACUTE RESPIRATORY ILLNESS

Dear Parent or Guardian:

We are working with the Fairfax County Health Department to notify you that there is an increase in respiratory illnesses at our school. These illnesses can cause symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, stuffy nose (congestion), sneezing, and feeling very tired. They can be caused by different germs, including COVID-19 and influenza (flu).

To keep your family safe, the Health Department recommends the following:

  • Monitor your child and keep them home if sick. Watch for signs of illness in your child. If your child has a fever or severe cough, keep them home. They should stay home, except for medical visits, until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours without medication, feel better overall, and are able to participate in school activities. After they return to school, parents may choose to have them wear a mask at school and during other indoor activities for 5 days after symptoms improve. This will further reduce the chance that they may spread illness to someone else.
  • Get your child tested. Consider getting your child tested for respiratory illness if they are sick. You can get COVID-19 tests to use at home, and testing for flu can be done by your healthcare provider.
  • Teach your child to wash their hands for 20 seconds with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes. Have your child use a tissue to cover their mouth and nose when they cough and sneeze. Throw tissues in the trash after use. If they do not have a tissue, they should cover coughs and sneezes with their upper sleeve.
  • Remind your child to avoid touching their face, like eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Improve your air quality at home. If it’s not too cold, open doors and windows or move activities outside to get fresh air.
  • Get vaccinated. Vaccines are highly recommended to protect your child from COVID-19 and the flu. Updated vaccines available each fall are needed for the best protection to prevent serious illness.
  • Talk to a healthcare provider about treatment. Talk to your child’s healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns, especially if they have a chronic illness or take long-term medications.

Please follow these recommendations to help keep your child healthy and to prevent others from getting sick. If you have questions, please contact your healthcare provider or the School Public Health Nurse, Jeannette Mitchell, RN  703-313-4034.

                                                Sincerely,

                                                                 Ann Smith

Join us as we discuss in clear understandable language: what are Social Security benefits, what are Virginia’s Medicaid Waivers, who is eligible, and how to apply.

Key Center Receives Continuous Improvement Exemplar Award!

We are thrilled to announce that Key Center has been honored with the Continuous Improvement Exemplar Award for 2024-25 by the Virginia Board of Education. This prestigious recognition was awarded to only 49 schools statewide. Key Center demonstrated exceptional progress, with a significant increase in the combined rate for math, reading, and science over the past three years. Our school's commitment to continuous improvement has resulted in a total increase of ten points or more across this period.

This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of our teachers, staff, and students. We invite you to join us in celebrating this remarkable accomplishment. Look out for the digital banner on our school website and stay tuned for further recognition at an upcoming School Board meeting in the new year. Congratulations to the entire Key Center community on this achievement!

Celebrating Inclusive Schools Week

This week, we're excited to join schools and communities worldwide in celebrating Inclusive Schools Week. This special week is dedicated to promoting inclusion, diversity, and equity in education. At Key Center School, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive and inclusive environment.

How We're Celebrating

To commemorate Inclusive Schools Week, we've planned a variety of activities and events designed to foster understanding, empathy, and acceptance:

  • Spirit Week: Continue to show your school spirit with our fun-filled Spirit Week! Each day will have a different theme, encouraging students to express themselves and celebrate their individuality.
  • Special Lessons on Inclusion:Teachers will be conducting special lessons focused on the importance of inclusion and diversity. Students will learn about different cultures, abilities, and perspectives.
  • Collaborative Communication Project: Students will work together on a collaborative project where they will describe their preferred mode(s) of communication. This project will help students understand and appreciate the diverse ways people communicate and connect.

By participating in these activities, our students will develop a deeper understanding of the value of inclusion and the importance of creating a welcoming and supportive community for all.

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

National School Psychology Week

National School Psychology Week, observed this year during the week of November 11-15, is a time to acknowledge the vital role that school psychologists play in fostering positive mental health and academic success. We appreciate our school psychologist, Ted Tynan, who works to support our students' social, emotional, and academic well-being. Mr. Tynan helps create a positive and nurturing learning environment for all. We are grateful for the difference that school psychologists make in the lives of students.

IMPORTANT -  Health Information Form- check your student’s backpack

For those students still missing the form, we have sent home the form in your student’s red folders.  Please complete and return the form to school by Friday, October 25th.

The Health Information Form (HIF)  provides valuable information regarding student health conditions. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHNs) utilize the information contained in the HIF to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health-Related Needs.

These forms are required for all students. Enrolling parents/guardians who have a SIS ParentVUE account may submit them electronically by using the Online Verification/Update packet.

Federal Impact Aid Survey
Attention FCPS Families!

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE

Click here for instuctions : https://www.fcps.edu/impact

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, we will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Please watch this video and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page for more information.

Need to Register for ParentVUE?

Learn how to activate your SIS ParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or completing the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type Federal Impact Aid Survey under Issue Description. Or, call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).

Veteran's Day

Veterans Day is a time to honor all who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It is a day to reflect on the sacrifices they have made and to express our gratitude for their service. Students play an important role in honoring veterans on Veterans Day. If there is a veteran in your life (family member, friend, neighbor, etc.) who you'd like to recognize, please fill out the form that you will find in your student’s backpack today.  Please include a photo of the person that you would like to honor (a photocopy is preferred, as originals won't be returned). These forms will be displayed in our hallway as a reminder to our students and visitors of the importance of honoring our veterans. If you have more than one family member you'd like to honor, please feel free to make copies of the form. All forms with pictures should be submitted to the Key Center main office by Wednesday, November 6. You may also attach the completed form with a photo by emailing them to [email protected].
