Ramadan

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is March 22. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year for Muslims, who believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran, Islam's sacred text, to Mohammed, on a night known as "The Night of Power." During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset. It is meant to be a time of spiritual discipline — of deep contemplation of one's relationship with God, extra prayer, increased charity and generosity, and intense study of the Quran. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids. This year, Ramadan begins with a half Observance Day on March 22, followed by an Observance Day on March 23. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Half-Observance days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

Medicaid Policy Changes

A change in federal Medicaid policy could impact the health care coverage of millions of students. In order to avoid gaps in coverage, families need to know:

  • Families, especially those who have moved residences during the pandemic, should contact their state Medicaid offices to ensure their contact information is up to date.
  • Families should watch their mail for letters about Medicaid and the state Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, status.
  • Recipients must submit any renewal forms they receive to maintain coverage, which states could mail at any point between March 2023 and February 2024.
  • Families who no longer qualify for Medicaid after the review may qualify for coverage through their state’s health insurance exchange.

Locate Benefits for People with Disabilities

People with disabilities may not apply for benefits that are available to them, causing them to miss out on saving money and receiving services. There’s an online tool called BenefitsCheckUp® that can help people with disabilities (and older adults) find the benefit programs they may qualify for. The tool is free to use and is confidential.

BenefitsCheckUp shows you information about benefits programs before you apply and provides contact information for the agency that offers the program. It matches you with benefits that may save you money in three simple steps:

  1. Enter your zip code to view benefits, choose the categories of interest and answer some questions.
  2. Check to see if you qualify and receive a personalized report, or provide further information if required.
  3. Find out how to apply or view more details about the benefit program on the agency's website.

Find benefits you may qualify for. If you have questions, call the BenefitsCheckUp helpline at 1-800-794-6559.

Developmental DIsabilities Awareness Month

March has been recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month since 1987 when President Ronald Reagan issued a public proclamation urging Americans to provide individuals with developmental disabilities “the encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.”  The theme for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 2023 is “Beyond the Conversation.” It is time to ask the question, “Once the conversations have taken place, what comes next?” What are communities doing to create change?

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman, Jeff McKay, recently read a proclamation naming March 2023 Developmental Disabilities Inclusion Month in Fairfax County.  More information about Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month can be accessed on the Fairfax County website.

National School Social Work Week

March 5-10 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

See the Staff Spotlight below to learn about our wonderful social worker, Caroline Phan. Thank you Caroline for all your advocacy and hard work to support our students and families!

Public Separate Day School Survey

This school year, the School Board has charged the Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD) with making recommendations regarding our Public Separate Day Schools.  Key Center falls into this category.  As part of the data collection process, ACSD’s School Board Charge subcommittee prepared a survey for distribution to our families.  Some time in the next week, you can expect to receive a hardcopy survey, as well as a link to a site where you can complete the survey electronically.  You may opt to respond whichever way works best for you.

Your input is very important!  This is your chance to have your voice heard as a family member of a student who attends a FCPS public separate day school.  Your answers will help the ACSD understand how you feel about your student’s public separate day school.  Please look for this survey and complete it in order to share your thoughts and desires for Public Separate Day Schools, and OUR school in particular.

*Please note:  this survey is specific to public separate day schools and is not the same as the Special Education Enhancement Plan feedback request (below in this newsletter).  You may opt to respond to both requests for feedback.

Reminder

All schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 20, for the Presidents Day holiday. Learn more about Presidents Day in Britannica.com. Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 21.

    • Increased access to PreK programming.
    • Supports for students with special education needs.
    • Funding for students in Advanced Academic Programs.
    • Changing student enrollment needs.
    • Increase in student and family supports, including access to middle school athletic opportunities that support student well-being.
  • Continuation of green investments.

Winter Break (Student holiday)- December 19 - January 2

We want to wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season!

As a reminder, winter break will be held Monday, December 19 through Monday, January 2. We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year. Classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

Our main office will be closed during winter break, yet we will monitor our voicemail on our main telephone number of 703-313-4000 for any pertinent messages. Please feel free to reach out should you or your family have any needs. We know life doesn’t take vacations, feel free to call and see if we can assist you.  We will be back in the office January 3, 2023.

Thank You Families for Your Support of Our Staff

We are grateful for the snacks and supplies that families contributed to support our staff this week.  We have enjoyed a visit from the treat cart, an early morning hot chocolate bar, and more.  We feel so appreciated- thank you!

Holiday Giving Option

We know that many families like to show their appreciation for teachers and staff with a gift around the holiday season. We are offering an option for holiday giving, using a service called GiftCrowd.  You will be able to use this GiftCrowd page to leave a note and a gift for any staff member who has made a difference to your family. The list includes all teachers and staff at Key Center, so you can give to as many people as you’d like, all in one place.

We are hoping this will be easier for all involved, and that gift recipients will benefit from one larger group gift that they can choose how to use.  Staff members will be able to redeem their gifts from one or more gift cards (including Amazon, Target, Walmart, or hundreds of others).  GiftCrowd does not charge any fees to either gift buyers or gift receivers - It is free to use.

Participation is completely optional. The receiver will see the names of people who contribute, but will only see the grand total of money contributed-not the individual contributions.

The deadline to contribute is Thursday, Dec. 15th at 10pm.  All gifts will be emailed to teachers and staff that evening.  Please contact Beth Curtis ([email protected]) if you have questions about the use of GiftCrowd for holiday giving.

COVID Diagnostic Testing in January

Mark your calendars! COVID diagnostic testing will be available for FCPS teachers, staff, and students at five Fairfax County locations from January 3-5 between the hours of 5 to 8 p.m. This testing is for those who are either experiencing COVID symptoms or have been exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID. Appointments are not required, but registration must be completed before testing. Visit the COVID Testing webpage for more information.
